A Quick Q&A with Kelly and Ian from Dancers and Dogs

A Quick Q&A with Kelly and Ian from Dancers and Dogs

Kelly and Ian are two professional photographers whose love for dogs has led them to create one of the most unique, beautiful and interesting projects on the Internet.  Dancers and Dogs is a pictorial collection that has one simple goal: photograph 100 dancers & 100 dogs across the United States. Learn more about this project and these two talented, dog-loving photographers in this exclusive Q&A for Border Collie Fan Club members!

Tell us a little bit about yourself?  Who are you and what do you do?
We are Kelly Pratt Kreidich and Ian Kreidich.  We are married photographers, based in St. Louis, MO, and we specialize in commercial photography.

Tell us about Dancers & Dogs?
Dancers & Dogs is a fun project, combining the beautiful lines and artistry of professional dancers, with the fun-loving, goofiness of dogs.  We want to show the lighter side of the dance world, which is often seen as serious, moody and dark.
How did this project come about?  What was your idea/inspiration for it?
We are the photographers for the St Louis Ballet, and we’ve also worked with dancer across the U.S., and in Cuba.  We started out with one dancer form the St. Louis Ballet, and one dog, just to see if this idea would even work.  People really enjoyed those first images, so we continued the series with more dancers.

What’s it like having dancers and dogs work together?  What are some of the challenges?
Dance photography is difficult enough in itself, so adding dogs into the mix makes for a tricky shoot.  That’s why we work with professional dancers for this project, because we like to know that the dancers will be able to do what we need from them.  The biggest challenge is getting dogs to do what you want them to do.  Dogs are like toddlers, and even the best-trained dogs have off days.  We work with dogs from all different training levels and backgrounds.  Some a very well-trained and know lots of behaviors  but most of the dogs included have been your average pet.  But we always laugh a lot on set.  Some great shots come out of dogs just being dogs.
What has been your favourite dog to work with (hint: was it a border collie?) 🙂
It’s hard to have one favorite.  There are so many great ones!  The border collies are always fun because they are so smart and athletic.

Can you tell us a bit about the border collies that have been featured in a few of your shoots?
We have had a few border collies in the project.  First, our dog, Dillon, who is a border collie mix.  Then there was a border collie, named Snip, who does obedience trials.  He was paired with a younger dancer, names Hannah Webb.  Then there were all four of the Super Collies – Hero, Marvel, Loki and Thor, owned and trained by Sara Carson.  They were on last season on America’s Got Talent.

What was it like working with such well-trained Border Collies like the Super Collies?
Hero and all of his siblings are such impressive dogs!  We were able to do some shots and poses with them that we’ve been wanting to do for a while, we were just waiting for the right dogs.  Having trained dog on set obviously makes things easier for us, and allows us to think of more creative and difficult shots.  Sara has done such an amazing job training them in a positive and fun way.
How can people find out more and support your project?
We just updated our website!  You can find out more about Dancers & Dogs at www.dancersanddogs.com.  You can also find us on Facebook and Instagram @dancersanddogs.  If people would like to see the project continue, and help us bring Dancers & Dogs to more cities, they can purchase shirts, prints and more from our website.  We are releasing a 2019 calendar this fall as well!

About This Book..
Historically, Border Collies are known as a working dog breed. Due to this very fact there are certain dog behaviors and instincts particular to Border Collies only. These behaviors and instincts define the personality of the dog. Understanding these behaviors and instincts is imperative if you desire a well-trained/behaved dog. This book is based on years of experience and thorough research helping you to choose, raise, train and live in harmony with your Border Collie. This book has been written by truly taking into consideration the breed as well as its abilities as this aspect is often ignored by owners of this dog. The content of this book will provide you with an insight of how a Border Collie relates and interacts with its owner and the outside world. Once you’ve read this book, you’ll be better equipped to own and take care of a Border Collie so that it becomes the wonderful companion it’s meant to be!

Yep, you read it right. Our awesome Border Collie never fails to amaze us with their amazing capabilities. Did you know that there is a record confirmed and verified by Guinness World Book of Records where the main star is a Border Collie? It is the world’s fastest car window opened by a dog which is actually recorded in just 11.34 seconds!

Meet Striker, a Border Collie owned by Francis V. Gadassi of Hungary. Gadassi trained Strikerunwound a non-electrical car window in just a span of 11.34 seconds.

The record was set in Quebec City, Canada on September 1, 2004.

According to Gadassi, he needed to train Striker a considerable amount of time before he could master in the first place. With years of practice and tons of dog treats waiting for Striker, he was finally able to do what most dogs couldn’t do: to open a non-electrical car window which required special training.

Some people even ask Gadassi why would he want to train his dog to do this or why did he invest so much time and effort just to teach him open the car window.

However, there is so much deeper meaning to this. One easy explanation to this is that the quicker Striker could get the window open, the better will be his chance of freedom. Through the dog’s eyes, he will have his liberty gained and now he could spend the rest of his life with his owner who did not make him open the car windows each day of his life.

This record is so bizarre that the Guinness people could only find clumsy grammar to collate the record.

However bizarre it could get, one thing is for sure. There is no stopping for our lovable Border Collies to be the world’s smartest dog ever lived. Even if it is opening a car window in a span of only 11 seconds.

After a ton of dogs owned, Josie Conlan never thought that her beloved Border Collie would one day save her life.

Josie Conlan and Ted

Conlan had no idea that she had a cancerous lump in her breast until her border collie dog named Ted began to repeatedly paw, cry and nuzzle at her chest. She began to think what was wrong. And by the time Conlan put her chest to her hand, she then realized that she already had a lump in her breast.

Conlan then visited her GP. She was diagnosed with breast cancer but now had the tumor. The doctor told Conlan that she had this thing at grade three already.

Fortunately, doctors advised Conlan that the disease hasn’t spread to her lymph nodes. In just a matter of 2 weeks, before she was scheduled for an operation, the lump grew more than five millimeters already. Josie believed that if it wasn’t for Ted, she could have suffered from a far worst case and could have been dead if not treated properly.

Conlan felt relief when she got the news that the tumor had not spread. “It was all down to Ted”, Conlan added.

Josie Conlan is a mother of four and a grandmother to two kids. Thye bought Ted after seeing him for sale on an online website. When Ted was about to go home for the first time, their family noticed that there was something wrong. Previous owners of Ted barely spoke to Conlan. They bundled Ted into her car straight away right before Joie was about to take Ted to the vets.

The vets told Josie that Ted had suffered a blow to his head. They believed it was likely that he had been kept for a long time in a very small cage.
Ted’s muscles had wasted away as well as he wasn’t able to walk straight.
Fortunately, after a few months of recovery plus the tender loving care Ted received from Josie’s family, the adorable Border Collie made a dramatic change.

“I have had other dogs but Ted and I became very close. I have never formed a bond as strong with my other dogs as I have done with Ted. He had saved my life”, Conlan said.

Josie's prognosis is now good after having surgery as well as chemotherapy and radiotherapy

Josie’s lump had her lumps removed in December 2014 and it was only recently when she learned that cancer had not spread.
Josie wants to let people know that they too should take notice whenever their dogs behave unusually. Especially if they try to draw attention to a particular area of their owner’s body.

“I think lots of people might probably just push their dog away if they started clawing at their chest or any part of their body. But it is important that dog owners must take notice because that unusual gesture really saved my life.

Josie says her rescue dog Ted alerting her to the tumour, which was fast growing, likely saved her life

Conlan is now recovering from her tumor removal and now face weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy just to ensure that cancer doesn’t return. Her prognosis is good and so far, all have been good for her and her Border Collie.

Conlan credits Ted for saving her life.
